Reverend Dr. Lyle Patrick Pointer
Reverend Dr. Lyle Patrick Pointer is a native of Olney, Maryland. He was born to Pastor and Mrs. Lionel Phillip Pointer, Jr., on May 10, 1984, and was dedicated on June 24, 1984. A few years later, he accepted Christ as his personal savior and was baptized at Round Oak Missionary Baptist Church, Silver Spring, Maryland. He is a product of The Oak and was nurtured through the Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Wednesday Bible Study, Soul Winners, Choir, Usher Board, summer activities and youth trips.
Growing up with music (musical productions, Chorus, Choral Ensemble), athletics (lacrosse, karate, football, softball), and business (business office, entrepreneur activities) experiences, he graduated with Honors from Sherwood High School in June 2002. Rev. Dr. Lyle Pointer then graduated with Honors from Morehouse College, Atlanta Georgia in May 2006, where he worked as a Resident Advisor and Supervising Lead Resident for two years. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (concentration in Marketing). While at Morehouse, he accepted his calling to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and one month after graduation (on Father’s Day) preached his Initial Sermon entitled: “In Pursuit of Pleasure” (Psalms 16:11) under his father, Pastor L. P. Pointer, Jr. In his last year at Morehouse, Rev. Dr. Lyle Pointer was accepted into the three-year Masters of Divinity Program at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He received a partial scholarship
Rev. Dr. Lyle graduated with a Masters of Divinity from Duke University in 2009. While at Duke, he participated in two paid clinical multicultural summer live-in internships at suburban mega and rural churches. His internship duties included: administration, budgeting, visiting members, hospital visits, preaching, assisting with youth groups, traveling out of state with youth, counseling, church meetings, organizing mid-week services, public relations, building homes for low income families, attending community meetings, and leading worship services.
After seven years away from Maryland, Rev. Dr. Lyle returned to serve at The Oak and work as an accountant with a private local organization (which involved frequent work on the West coast). He now works with a team of auditors at a financial corporation - on the Inner Harbor - and bears the title of Vice President Vendor Management. This job also requires frequent national travel.
Rev. Dr. Lyle is an Associate Minister and Special Assistant to Pastor Pointer at Round Oak. His duties include Pastoral support, preaching the Gospel, marketing coordination/management, social media, special assignments (e.g., music, sound) and community outreach. He is also the Minister of Young Adults.
Rev. Dr. Lyle’s favorite scripture is Isaiah 54:17 which reads: “No Weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.”
